A science centre in Calgary seems like an indoor day of fun with children, but think again! On select months, Telus Spark runs adults only nights, covering a diverse range of topics to peak the interest of children at heart.
Intrigued by the kid free, fully-licensed, adults only nights at Telus Spark, I finally had the opportunity to attend an event, The Artistry of Alcohol. Our evening began at 6pm, where we entered the atrium of the building and were pleasantly surprised to see an area of set up tables, bars, and even dogs! After buying some happy hour tickets, and deciding upon a beverage, we walked around the atrium to begin our learning: the art of “shaking”, the fundamentals of distilling, malt knowledge-building, and daiquiri DNA. Visiting the ultraviolet gin and tonic lounge, and being slightly creeped out by the live, fluorescent scorpions and snakes, I learned that the quinine in tonic water, which gives it the bitter taste, also makes the tonic water glow. Continuing outside, we encountered a drunk vision simulation challenge and sampled beers from five Alberta, craft breweries: Blindman Brewing, Revival Brewcade, Apex Predator Brewing, Bow River Brewing, and Eighty-Eight Brewing Company. Back indoors, we attended a comical Hack Your Hangover session by Dr. Raj.
The evening was engaging, informative, and fun! We could carry our drinks around the building, exploring and playing with the current, interactive exhibits that exist. The outdoor playground and giant slide allowed us to reconnect with our inner child.
