Exploring the Beauty of YYC and Beyond

If you asked me six years ago if I would be celebrating International Coffee Day, I would have looked at you like you were crazy. It wasn’t until my first trip to Spain when I tried coffee for the first time, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Prior to that, I just never had the taste for it. A burnt taste always seemed to linger and the smell just turned me right off. But for whatever reason, while embracing the Spanish culture, I became accustomed to having a morning and evening espresso. Since then, I’ve never looked back.

Trying to find quality, and European style coffee six years ago in Calgary was harder than I anticipated. I didn’t really know where to start, or did I really know what I was looking for. I just knew what I liked. Being a lot more community aware now, I’ve discovered numerous cafes that tick the box. In fact, Calgary has so many great places it makes coffee tasting more like wine. And I think I’ve found my perfect one: Phil & Sebastian.

Being established way back in 2007, Phil & Sebastian have five locations now in Calgary, and shipping available across Canada. My favourite of their locations is the one in East Village, in the Simmons Building. The historical vibe, cozy centre, and proximity to the river makes it a great location to hang out, or to grab a coffee on the go. They make everything from your traditional drip coffee or espresso, or a delicious cappuccino. There really isn’t one option that’s better than the rest, it’s more of choosing what suits your mood. Their fame to claim is, “We strive to be that local coffee shop that just does things right. We’re different.” I would agree completely. And one thing for sure is these guys know how to brew great coffee!
